Why Use ArthramidVet® 2.5% iPAAG?
Arthramid Vet 2.5% iPAAG is a unique and patented hydrogel consisting of 97.5% sterile water and 2.5% polyacrylamide (PAAG). This results in a gel although similar to hyaluronic acid in structure and tissue compatibility, but with a superior and longer lasting effects. It integrates into the joint itself and is non-degradable.
Arthramid Vet is elastic and viscous in nature, ideally suited for injection into the joints of animals providing an innovative and safe solution to veterinarians. It is supplied in a sterile pre-filled 1ml syringe sealed with a Luer lock fitting.
Arthramid Vet is used to treat non-infectious causes of joint pain and lameness in animals, including both early and late stages of osteoarthritis (OA). OA can be caused by traumatic injury or usual wear and tear which causes the joint to become inflamed. As the cartilage or cushion between the joints breaks down, pain, stiffness, and swelling develop, causing lameness.
Lameness remains a common cause of poor performance in the equine industry. In addition to treating pain, treatment should ideally also serve to arrest or slow the progression of the disease. It is now well recognised that the OA disease process starts in the synovial membrane and that inflamed synovium is an essential component in the pathogenesis, with it always being present in cases of arthritis.
As part of the OA complex, the elastic and viscous nature of the synovial fluid is abnormally low. Furthermore, the synovial membrane becomes a source of inflammatory products (pro-inflammatory cytokines) which contribute to the progressive degrading of the joint over time.
Studies have shown Arthramid Vet integrates into the synovial membrane, stabilising the joint capsule and increasing elasticity, which in turn reduces the onset of synovitis and its harmful effects. The formation of a rejuvenated synovium further improves the nature of the synovial fluid within the joint itself.
Arthramid Vet essentially provides joint lubrication and causes a ‘cushion-like’ effect on the joint, increasing glide and which allows for the preservation and even regeneration of the joint itself contributing to reducing the pain of synovitis and osteoarthritis, and ultimately restoring the joint to healthy function (homeostasis).

I have utilised hundreds of doses of 2.5% PAAG gel since 2014, and during this period I have learnt how to maximise its benefit in my caseload of predominantly Thoroughbred racehorses. In my opinion, it can minimise the use of intra-articular corticosteroids or other joint therapies used in Thoroughbred stables. 2.5% PAAG is not a cortisone and shouldn’t be expected to diminish acute inflammation like corticosteroids do. In my opinion, it appears to have the greatest clinical effect in appropriately diagnosed joints with low-grade performance limiting lameness that are treated early in the horse’s preparation, or if utilised within a preparation given time (approximately 3 weeks) before one would expect to see a marked clinical improvement.

I was one of the first vets to use Arthramid worldwide and have now used Arthramid for over 10 years in our clinic. We have injected over a thousand horses and have found it to be very safe. It has been a major game-changer in the way we treat OA in our patients. We have fantastic results with really frustrating cases and are still working on new indications and treatment schemes for the product. There are not many “new” products implemented in our OA Toolbox in recent years.
